William Saliba conceded he has "not been so good" for Arsenal this season and said he demands more from himself if he is to help the Gunners win silverware. (More Football News)
After three loan spells with Saint-Etienne, Nice and Marseille, Saliba broke into the Arsenal team in 2022 and has formed an excellent partnership alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.
In the Premier League last term, Saliba and Gabriel helped Arsenal concede a league-low 29 goals as Mikel Arteta's side finished two points behind champions Manchester City.
However, Arsenal have struggled to maintain their high defensive standards this season, letting in 24 goals with 10 games of the current campaign still remaining.
The Gunners also find themselves 15 points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, with it looking increasingly likely that they will fall short of the title once again.
"I want to be one day [one of] the best defenders in the world," Saliba told a news conference on Tuesday.
"You have to work a lot, to win trophies as well. It's my dream. I think I'm not the best at the moment because this season I've not been so good. It's like this.
"I have to review my season, but this season is not so good. I have to watch my partner, Gabriel, who has been so good this season. I have to focus on myself and work more."
When pressed on where he had been lacking, Saliba said: "My concentration. I have to score more, help my team to win some trophies.
"When you win trophies you can say I'm the best, but as I said, this season we are still in the Champions League. The Premier League is not finished, I have to push myself."
Though, despite his self-criticism, Saliba believes Arsenal are close to winning a major trophy, having failed to win silverware since the Community Shield back in 2023.
"I think we are close, very close. We will keep going, we don't stop working. When you are at a club like this you want to win trophies," Saliba added.

Arsenal welcome PSV Eindhoven to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.
They thrashed the current Eredivisie champions 7-1 in the first leg, becoming the first team in Champions League history to score seven goals away from home in a knockout stage match.
Gauri is both deeply personal and starkly political. Lankesh, a prominent Kannada filmmaker, narrates the story of her elder sister not just through her memories, but also through the issues that Gauri advocated. Accounts from Gauri’s co-workers at Lankesh Patrike—a vernacular weekly— fellow human rights activists and journalists are interwoven with those whom she reported on. Step by step, the story unveils the many reasons why Gauri attracted the ire of the right wing regime, even before they assumed power at the Centre in 2014. The narrative is strung together from reporting footages and “behind-the-scenes” videos. The hand-held camera and gritty video quality make these sequences visually dynamic, communicating the zeal with which Gauri embarked on her expeditions.
His mother (Janaki) is saddled with debt to the trader. There’s an advance she took to keep the family afloat, after her husband, a card-carrying communist, was found dead. To get themselves unbound, the family of three have no choice but to lug. All the escape-eyeing Sivanaindhan wants is to attend school and stick to homework. Education may enable a job but how far can it cut into historical lack of access to a life of dignity? The bleak emphasis strays to how cooped up the villagers are in misery and neglect. Their chief livelihood springs from lugging the plantain combs from the fields to the lorry. Generations slip by yet there’s little difference in their social status. Protests of the villagers for a one-rupee wage hike naturally comes at a price. The one steady thing through decades of inherited labour is public humiliation at the slimmest reluctance.
Arsenal's biggest aggregate victory in major European competition is 10-0 vs Standard Liege in the 1993-94 Cup Winners' Cup, but Arteta is expected to rest some key men.
Saliba, however, hopes to have some involvement in the contest, despite having missed just six games all season for the Gunners.
"We don't have to think about the last game as tomorrow we have to win," Saliba said.
"Even if it was 7-1, we want to win every game, and it's at home, so if we win tomorrow, we will have confidence for the next games.
"I don’t know if I'm playing tomorrow. I will maybe know tonight or tomorrow morning.
"I would really like to play because it’s a Champions League game at homevoy-newyearpg, and we want to win because it will give us a lot of confidence."
